Pros

After working for San Francisco start-ups for 8 years, I can say with confidence Checkr's onboarding process is the best best and most comprehensive I've experienced in the Bay Area and this team is relatively small. What do I mean by best and most comprehensive? Well to start, the onboarding is roughly a week long. You meet people from all corners of the company and get a high-level view of their day-to-day. It helps you not only meet people from other areas of the company but gives you insight on what they do and their functioning role within the company. Checkr values culture, a lot. The interview process, while heavily leaning into skillsets and responsibilities also included a balance of culture questions that I felt were well-balanced and lended to honest answers without judgement. I made friends instantly here at Checkr. Which, sad to say I haven't been able to do at most start-ups, at least this quickly. People here are warm, genuine, and come from a place of caring. This rolls up to a lot what I mentioned above about valuing company culture. People here love to hang out with one another and socialize. We're not a "family" ... we're "friends". There's no sense of forced culture here because somehow they've managed to hire people who are great culture fits (most of the time) and we just click. Which I think is truly fantastic and rare in the landscape of SF start-ups. People are supportive in their roles and have a positive can-do outlook. So far I have not felt as if there is any amount of micromanagement or blockers. They demand excellence in your work but create clear pathways not hurdles for you to achieve that. Checkr also has a mission for helping employers not only better understand how to be compliant in their hiring practices when it comes to background checks but also educate them on how to eliminate bias and encourage fair chance hiring. Which I am a strong advocate of. Diversity and inclusion is taking very seriously and Checkr is fully transparent around our progress in achieving those goals. We are also a fair chance hiring company, which ...I love. Knowing that we walk the talk further solidifies my love for this company.

Cons

The current landscape of the office makes it hard to socialize on a regular basis with colleagues in certain departments. The upside is, lunches can help mitigate that issue a bit. Though the company is profitable, it can be somewhat uncomfortable with the amount of spending that happens for team lunches. I understand the concept of getting out and having a lunch with new and different colleagues every other Friday, but would love to lessen the frequency of this. Just seems slightly irresponsible. Especially as we grow -- can we sustain this? Occasionally feels like some departments are more overworked than others. This could be the strain of bandwidth and resources. But wish this was a bit more balanced.

Thanks for the comprehensive/detailed review and glad to hear things are going well for you. As for your comments - happy to chat further f2f as well. Opening up a second floor certainly makes cross-departmental socializing more challenging - but sometimes that's the effect of growth. Needing more space and figuring that out is never easy. But we are absolutely brainstorming more ways to keep us more connected. As for the comment on the bi-weekly lunches, appreciate the concern and fiscal responsibility. I think while it certainly has a cost, the positive effect provides enough ROI to justify the cost. Will it continue as we go to 300, 500, 1000 people? Likely not, but for now - as much you're concerned, the costs aren't a needle mover. - thanks, Arthur / Director of Talent

Pros

Great insurance. Learning Stipends, etc

Cons

-Senior leadership only cares about what is new and shiny. -They treat AI like a religion. Forcing everyone to use AI for everything as though we don't realize that the end goal is to eliminate our roles - All Hands Meetings every month where Senior Leadership pats themselves on the back while ignoring any existing issues. - Support is treated like a necessary evil instead of a fundamental part of doing business. Would prefer to ship the roles overseas or replace with AI - Extremely high attrition for Senior Leadership.
