Pros

Good for the resume if you're committed to the industry

Cons

For anyone considering applying for a position at the company that is not in the -Cataloguer - Specialist track please reconsider your application. I cannot emphasize this enough: the company does not value employees in the support or operations functions. Outside of the specialist track, you'll find an ecosystem that does not set up clear promotion plans, compensation plans, or general career guidance. Quite often even managers are unclear of what to tell their junior people regarding these areas. These positions are extremely sticky, and you'll find that once you start, transferring internally to a more interesting role for your interests is near impossible. HR is functionally useless and unaccommodating to your needs. They're mostly a show organization who's impact and sway is marginal, see company diversity statistics for confirmation. (to HR: please don't respond with some predictable, generic explanation, it's sad. Take the criticism and actually learn from it) If you are someone interested in the art market and feel that leveraging your competency in Operations, Finance, Tech, Client Service , Project Management at Christie's, I'd strongly advise against it. If you like the art market, take your skills and seek a role at one of the newer tech-based platforms in the space who will value your skills and pay you a livable wage. I'd add you'd probably have a rewarding time in the specialist track, but for the rest of us, it's a disappointment. They'll sell you a false bill of goods during the hiring process, then it's second class citizenry.

We are sorry that you are not happy in your current role. It is our practice to engage with all reviews on Glassdoor and we provide a summary, on a monthly basis, to the executive group. Career paths for all job families are openly visible to all staff on our share point site and the New York HR Team host weekly ‘open door’ sessions which are accessible to all staff to discuss concerns and career goals in a confidential setting. We note that you are still with the company, we would encourage you to take advantage of the above resources. Sadly the art world is not a hugely diverse sector, however Christie’s are at the forefront of efforts to increase diversity, not just within our own firm but across the wider industry; we recently launched a regional ED & I (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) committee in the Americas to drive this culture change forward as well as a fund to support specific external projects to achieve this aim.
