Pros

Some very talented researchers, scientists and clinicians

Cons

Too many layers of administratium. Middle management predominately with lightweight business backgrounds, and often clueless as to how best to manage, motivate and lead scientific staff. My direct manager had an associate degree, saw the inside of our lab less than once per year, had no clue about what research activities we were pursuing, save for our annual reports and published papers, yet was responsible for my annual review. My PI, who I saw on an almost daily basis for years, closely supervised my work, and led our research activities was not considered my 'leader.' Management/business promotion ladder is much deeper than that available for research/laboratory staff.
