Residential Construction is bad - Project Manager Columbia University Employee Review

Pros

CU offers a diverse environment with great people to work with. The benefits are strong, especially for employees with families, and the PTO allowance is generous.

Cons

The Director of Residential Construction demonstrates poor management and leadership skills. He struggles to effectively manage a team, fails to adequately plan or distribute workloads, and does not rely on qualified professionals such as architects and engineers. Additionally, he avoids making decisions, which frequently results in project delays. He has repeatedly shown an inability to take responsibility for issues, instead placing blame on APMs and PMs at the first opportunity. There is also a lack of role clarity and equity within the team: Assistant Project Managers and Project Managers are often expected to perform the same responsibilities despite having different titles and compensation. Leadership overall shows a lack of trust in employees, which is reflected in the prohibition of remote work. There is little to no encouragement for professional development or career growth.
