Pros
Benefits and salary are decent considering clerks are not required to have a high school diploma or any professional training. Refer to the County HR employee benefits page for update benefits.
Cons
Clerical staff are mistreated by the clerical supervisor. A lawsuit (Spruill vs Contra Costa County) was filed against the County due to the mistreatment and wrongful termination of an African American clerk. The lawsuit focused on the behavior of the clerical supervisor and their disparate treatment of African American staff. Despite the lawsuit and multiple complaints filed against the current clerical supervisor, the mistreatment of clerical staff, especially African American women, continues. For example, one clerk (white male) is late every day. That clerk is not required to report his tardiness on his timesheet while other clerks (African American) are constantly reprimanded for tardiness and absenteeism. The clerical supervisor is fully aware of the fact the clerk is late every day and fails to correct the timesheet yet changes the timesheets of other clerical staff. The clerical supervisor also bullies, lies to and about other staff. The clerical supervisor provides staff with incorrect instructions and training material related to patient health insurance. Personnel, hospital, and department management have been made fully aware of these issues and have been provided with proof of the behavior of the clerical supervisor. Nothing has been done to deal with these issues. If anything, the staff members who report these issues have faced more repercussions than the clerical supervisor.
