Scheduling and drive times can be frustrating. Typically clients are around 20 miles away, sometimes they’re close but it’s pretty rare from my experience. Occasionally they’ll give you a substitute session that’s 29 miles away which in OC means you’ll be driving for an hour. Typically they schedule those longer drives either first thing in the morning or last session of the day so you can’t get paid for any of the time or gas you spent driving which can be frustrating when you have an 8 AM session or end at 7 PM. However, luckily 7 PM end times are rare. You have to have a true passion for working with neurodiverse kids as you will be hit, bit, scratched, and have your hair pulled often. You will be working with parents almost as much as the kids, some of them are difficult, and it can be intimidating dealing with them, in their homes, without having a supervisor around to support. Burnout is so so common, however that’s more of an industry problem rather than Coyne.
