Pros

Amusing and friendly coworkers. Informal office environment.

Cons

First off, it took me 5 weeks to get my first paycheck. The payroll system they were using for contractors was a terribly amateur design that they sourced to what I imagine was the lowest offshore bidder and the site support was almost non-existent. I'm still getting emails asking me to submit a time sheet and I left 2 months ago. They had no idea what they wanted in hiring me. They brought me on as a systems engineer contract-to-hire to evaluate their systems because they had doubts about their infrastructure design and best practices and I was supposed to manage them moving forward. They couldn't elaborate on the actual responsibilities of the position I was hired for because the manager "was new to the roll and didn't understand it very well". They had almost no work for me while I was getting acclimated and when I tried to find things to work on and areas to improve they'd agree and then shut it down because of timidity to change. It was a very casual office with employees goofing off most of the day, which didn't bother me, but clearly no one was getting much done and the whole work day seemed to center around lunch. This was not a professional growth environment. It was more like high school shop class.

Pros

Customers Bank has talented employees and offers opportunities to work on meaningful projects in a fast-growing organization. My experience is specific to the People Experience (HR) team, not the company as a whole.

Cons

The workload wasn’t the problem; the leadership culture was. Priorities changed constantly, direction shifted frequently, and expectations often changed without clear communication. It was difficult to gain momentum because projects were regularly redirected or reworked before they could be completed. The culture seemed to value being immediately responsive and highly visible over thoughtful planning and long-term execution. Rather than empowering employees, the management style felt reactive, closely managed, and inconsistent. That made it difficult to feel successful, regardless of the effort you put in. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment with constant change and little structure, this may be a good fit. If you value collaboration, clear communication, stable priorities, and the ability to take ownership of your work, you may find the environment frustrating. If you’re interviewing for an HR role, ask about leadership style, turnover, how priorities are set, and how success is measured. The answers to those questions will tell you a lot.
