No support for growth, no direction, no paying down tech debt - Software Engineer DMI Employee Review

Pros

It paid the bills and there were some challenging projects that DMI inherited from the previous owner of the contract it took over. I got the chance to to work on a wide variety of technologies and types of work.

Cons

I knew I was underpaid because I never pushed very hard on salary stuff (I did get one 5K raise/title bump, but every other annual raise was 2% or less), and I don't feel there was much support for my growth as a software engineer. A lot of fighting fires, and not a lot of support for paying down technical debt, except when there was approval for considering a rewrite. DMI took over the contract and did a reorganization that nobody working there was happy with. Later on, there was what I believe was a stealth layoff (they had devs working on too many non-dev things and weren't filling positions when they left), followed by some actual layoffs after I left. It's possible these reductions were at the request of the customer.

Pros

They have been good to me. My manager was very good, I am contracted to a state organization to a good team. This is probably the best job I've ever had. I recommend them.

Cons

Honestly, I have no complaints.
