Good pay but poor management - Writer Daily Journal (California) Employee Review

Pros

Pretty good salary for a starting journalist. I noticed a lot of fresh out of college writers, which is a blessing and a curse. The name is a good one to put on your portfolio, but unless you are an admin to the site, you can't access your own work to add to your portfolio because of the block the impose to non-subscribers. This could be a direct pipeline to the Wall Street Journal if that's your route.

Cons

Again, lots of young writers. You're working side by side with some people who have law degrees and some who only have their college newspaper in their portfolio, so it's kind of a free for all talent-wise. The management doesn't know how to lead. There is no coffee in the break room. But, perhaps the most upsetting to me, is the actual content of the work. Unless you're interested in law, you're writing some pretty boring stuff here. And if you are interested in law and you're working here, you most likely failed out of law school. The DJ is a great publication in that area, but it's such a niche market that those clips might as well have never existed when I apply to other publications. My advice to a young journalist would be to take the pay cut and work at a daily or even weekly newspaper rather than the DJ. The DJ is Corporate with a capital C.

Pros

Classic, old-school style newsroom environment.

Cons

Not really a con, since all reporters work on tight deadlines, but DJ reporters work on semi-tight deadlines. Reporters probably submit 1-3 stories a day.
