Pros

Lots of classroom flexibility, easy path to tenure, co-workers are friendly and easy to get along with. Oil and Gas is driving the local economy which is providing a healthy local funding base. As long as that industry (particularly the Eagle Ford Shale) does well, Del Mar College will continue to do well too. The President and upper administration generally tries to do the right thing.

Cons

Administrative support staff is mostly incompetent. It is a community college so there is a WIDE range of academic abilities from students who are no where near being ready for college, to students with bright futures. It makes it very challenging to teach with such a wide range of college readiness in every classroom. Medical benefits for families are terrible as you have to pay half of the premium out of pocket for any dependents. Dental coverage is not included in the medical plan and has it's own premium. Faculty are required to teach 15-credit loads, much heavier than typical 4-year university positions. It leaves very little time for research/professional development opportunities. Corpus Christi is a strange place culturally with a mix of Mexican-American values and traditional "WASP" values. The majority of the population is hispanic, poor and the two biggest employers in town are the oil refineries and the military. The Texas state government has cut funding for higher education almost every year for the past 30 years.

Pros

Great work environment, a lot of the workers are very knowledgeable and never minded making sure I understood everything even though I was just an intern. Sometimes even giving me challenges to make sure I was paying attention to details and taking in the advice and knowledge over the time I was there.

Cons

I can’t really think of any cons, everyone was very nice and considerate. They made sure I had what I needed and taught me what I didn’t know yet.
