easy summer job, but the weather and the customers make it difficult - Concessions Delaware North Employee Review

Pros

On a busy day you might get good tips, but you do share them. When I worked there, concessions staff overseen by Delaware North get to choose the shifts they work. You only work home games, so you get a week on, then a week or two off. If you get certain stands on concert days, you get a good view of the concert. If you sell alcohol you'll be working alone or with others, but if it's just you or one other person then you get a greater share of tips. A few people tip in cash which is nice. Even If you don't have a car, you'll still get off work in time to catch the bus home. If your stand is slow they'll let you go home early.

Cons

It's an outside job so you have to deal with sweltering heat and sometimes serious cold in the early spring. shifts are typically less than 8 hours, usually 6.5 hours. Shifts are often shortened/cancelled due to weather. No breaks. Customers can be rude and entitled when you enforce the rules. Training is very rushed; you have to learn a lot on your own, and different supervisors will tell you different things. You might have to cover for a stand you've never worked at, and have to learn on the spot with a line of customers in front of you. You might have to work with teens who may or may not pull their weight. You may also have to work with adults who wander off for hours and leave you by yourself during the busiest time of your shift. The 1st floor is much more crowded than the 4th floor, and the customers are ruder as well. If you wanted variety in where you're placed each shift, you probably wont find it. In Ohio, if you're 19 or older you'll almost exclusively be selling alcohol, since 18 year olds and minors legally can't. Supervisors can be hard to find, and you often have to wait for them to finish making their rounds at all the stands. Same goes for managers. I had a card I needed to use to sign in to the POS. It didn't work all season and the manager could never find the time to get me a new one.
