Pros
They treat you like a grownup from day one. You're given all the resources you need to succeed but it's up to you to steer your career in the right direction. Nobody's going to hold your hand. The benefits are amazing: 15% mandatory match into retirement, 25 days vacation, 30 days sick leave every year. You get your own little slush fund for conferences or paper writing or whatever you want.
Cons
The soft-money environment can be brutal. Each faculty member is responsible for bringing in his/her own funding through external grants and contracts or be useful to other faculty who have funding and need help. It's a tough way to go, but somehow people make a career there.
