Pros

Remote first They hire JR devs (Nice for the JRs, tough for those of us who have to work with them) Caring leadership. DL is going through some layoffs right now which I am unfortunately a part of but they have been very open with this for months now and are giving each of us ample amounts of time to find different jobs before we are let go. They're keeping us on for an extended time to allow us to have our benefits for a bit longer and even paying for Cobra to help with benefits after we are let go.

Cons

Pay could be better Layoffs Promotions and raises are defined by your colleagues through CultureAmp (a platform to gather feedback). If you're not a very social person and your team doesn't write paragraphs on top of paragraphs giving you an amazing review then you're most likely turned down for a promotion DL expects A LOT from their senior devs. Constantly mentoring, constantly doing something that is outside of your project that benefits the company.

Pros

I've never worked at a company that stands by their employees like Detroit Labs.

Cons

It's a difficult time to be running a smaller services company

Pros

The tricky thing about Glassdoor is it takes ratings throughout the lifetime of a company and can’t be separated by eras. Having been an immersive consultant for 5 years, been apart of extended think ranks, and haven’t worked at other companies of a similar size, I believe I have a vast sample size to compare to. Detroit Labs is a great company from end to end. From the talent level to the camaraderie all the way to the future ahead. The portfolio with the brand names and the projects would be a Greatest Hits album for the vast majority of other customer software development companies. The founding team is intelligent, not just open to listening but will make sure you get the resources to do it, and has created a “cool” culture. It’s tough to describe other than that. But even from the interview process you get a great sense of it. Very professional but nice comedic relief at the same time.

Cons

None that I can think of. No company is perfect, but anything I could list would just be inconsequential nit picky things that don’t matter much, if at all, in the grand scheme of things.
