Pros

It was close to home

Cons

They lied and told me I would get 20-25 hours per week when I interviewed. I was hired as a part time operations manager. They said they could only pay me $10 an hour and my hours were never stable. One week I had 17 hours, One week it was less than 14 hours. Then, 19.5 hours... then 22, then 16 . There is only one cashier and one manager scheduled at a time. So even though I should have been able to take a break (and was told to clock out for one) I was still required to work through my “break” ringing as back up, providing change, doing bill checks, entering my manager # at the register for exchanges, quantities, and price adjustments & helping customers who wanted me to call other dollar trees for them, walk them over to isles to find things, check in the back for things... the list goes on. Before I knew it, my “break” was over. The store was constantly trashed because there simply isn’t enough employees to keep on top of all the work. I was coming in nightly and straightening ridiculous messes, damaging out broken/stolen items with packaging left behind, putting things back in the correct isles, only to find it was even worse the following day. There is a “go back station” where damages, and items left in the wrong isles are placed for sorting, going back out on the floor, or disposing of. This station was a nightmare always. all of the baskets would be full, 2-3 shopping carts over flowing, plus baskets on the floor, and cardboard boxes full of stuff. You could barely walk back there without tripping. The other managers were lazy and would leave spoiled food they found — such as thawed frozen fish, rotten blocks of cheese, thawed frozen asparagus, leaking milk, and they’d just pile more damages on top of it until the whole area smelled horrible. I was damaging out items one night, and the putrid juice from the thawed out items leaked on me. It smelled disgusting. The workload they expect from you in the limited amount of hours they’re willing to provide you, along with the laughable pay that couldn’t even fund a high schoolers weekend mall trips made this the worst job I ever had. You are entrusted with so much and you are paid garbage, treated like a workhorse, and if another manager doesn’t feel like coming in, you are scheduled at their will— especially on weekends. I literally worked every single weekend Friday-Sunday at one point and when I asked for at least one set day off on the weekend, they threatened to fire me altogether. Steer clear!

Pros

My coworkers are kind and honest. The work is fun when it can be and some of the customers have a good spirit. When it comes to your break, you can at least afford your snacks/meals cause they're cheap. I find it fun to look into what my customers are buying. Managers are great and modest about their greatness. Would recommend to a friend because there are worser places to work at.

Cons

Some people have been consistently calling out in my area and I am burnt out from people who don't show up when they're scheduled to. If you're a cashier, you only get a ten minute break and it's not enough time for ramen. You'll feel lucky when you get 30 minutes for covering someone else's shift. Corporate is dramatic with some of their rules, like it's considered theft if you don't pay for your food, but you require a manager to be present in order to pay for it, and managers can be busy at times. Some customers can be quite impatient whilst making the line longer with demands, especially if they don't calculate their finances whilst shopping. Some of the technology is old and when it's broken down, I am told that I am not allowed to put "out of order" signs up. Some customers don't understand that they should never pay with a $100 bill early in the morning at any store. If you want to volunteer and do extra work without a payroll, you will be told that you can get written up for it because they have to pay you. The trainings on workday are obvious that they're old by many years and have not been updated to match new policies.
