Pros
Friendly co-workers and 99% of the customers are great.
Cons
I'm a former office manager who took this position because I simply couldn't find anything suitable and some work is better than no work. I was hired as a cashier and yes I do work the register and all the responsibilities that are required to keep the front end in excellent condition. It does not end there however. You are also expected to stock the sales floor while running back and forth from wherever you are sent trying to keep an eye on your register. It's more then a bit difficult trying to see a cash register when you are in an aisle that is around the corner or at the back of the store. I do not have x-ray vision. The customers get upset, rightfully so, because they do not see anyone to check them out. I now have to deal with either an angry customer or an angry manager who is under the impression that there are two of me working. The customers are not just angry because of the situation at the register, there are boxes and U-boats all over the store waiting to be put up. Our customers are complaining more and more about having to wade through and move things to get to the shelves which are bare. There is no one to put stock out as our stockers are scheduled for one day a week. The store is run with the bare minimum of 2 employees per shift. How do you expect to get anything done when the manager is either lazy or has paperwork that needs to be done and a cashier who is supposed to be checking out customers? There is also the matter of scheduling. I do not have a problem with this being part-time as I am fortunate enough to be able to work only part-time at this point. What I do not like is showing up for work and being told there are not enough hours and getting sent home. A phone call would go a long way in that situation. A phone call would also go a long way when after printing out the schedule for the week there are sudden changes! There is nothing like looking at your schedule one day and the next you are suddenly working on a day you didn't know about. The schedule is either reprinted in the middle/end of the week or they just pencil you in without bothering to ask. Being part-time does not mean I can just drop something else I had planned.
