Pros
Pay was better than most hotel management jobs. Free hotel stays for GM's was nice. Bonus potential was lucrative.
Cons
Work hours. Scheduled 7a-7p, but told if scheduled at 7am to be there by 6:30am, and could never leave at 7p, often there until 8p. Called day and night, no real days off, no holidays off, goal posts always move. If you are successful they will change your parameters for success until you are struggling again. They will use you up and throw you away for a younger model when you have nothing left to give. I saw it over and over and over for 6 years. There is a reason there was a class action lawsuit by AGM's over the work load (that they chose to settle and keep out of court). 60 hour weeks were the norm, the expected minimum with no overtime pay. You have to essentially live at the hotel (and I did literally live there on several occasions when moving to a new city for them). Its never enough. Its like shoveling snow while its still snowing, no matter how much you do your never done. Beyond this though, the truly unbearable part is the CEO Chuck. He puts on a face of being a man of the people and here for the team members, a true advocate of the employee. Behind closed doors a GM gets to see the real him and its not pretty. He is a 3rd generation CEO who inherited everything and he acts like it. His hobby is how he can make someone uncomfortable. He will practice his psy-ops on you until he figures out what makes you squirm, and he wont be happy until he does. Its the most bizarre, gross, counter-intuitive way to manage people ive ever seen. Toxic gets way overused, but if ever appropriate its the way the CEO of this company acts. My regional manager had to prepare me to meet with him once and we sat in silence for 20 minutes because she knew the CEO would bring me into his office and stare at me without saying a word for that long to see when I break and what comes out when I start just babbling on to break the uncomfortable silence. Have you ever been stared at for a long period of time by the most powerful person in your company without anyone uttering a word? Its extremely off-putting, but right in line for his behavior. Drury is good for a solid pay check, but if you compare the hours worked to get that pay check versus others, the pay is all of a sudden less glamourous. I made 94k there, but I would rather make 70k and work 40 hours and have a CEO that isnt insane.
