Pros
-Great learning opportunity in the field of construction -You'll observe a large variety of construction project from start (Geotechnical Investigation) to finish. -Many great individuals across multiple offices.
Cons
-Work from home has been effectively eliminated. -Salary is not competitive when compared with other Civil Engineering routes -Third party inspection services are a bulk of the work, and the field reports are prepared (primarily) by technicians for whom English is not their first language; let alone a language in which they are proficient. It can be immensely frustrating trying to clarify thing that they observed. Expect frequent headaches with this work. -There is constant turnover for those technicians which results in many of them are not adequately performing their required tasks; despite achieving their WACEL certs. As a PE, you will end up stamping all of their field reports and I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable doing so after shortcuts and thoughtlessness that I've seen from some of those guys. -The senior staff (with the exception of a select few) are not helpful, nor enjoyable to work with; putting that as lightly as I can. I don't aspire to be anything like them, which indicates a bad fit long-term.
