Pros

Low and mid level staff are endlessly optimistic and driven to take action on the defining issue of our time. Despite the detrimental management, employees who work on their projects and defend their territory can find personal success and career growth. I had the pleasure to work with such people, most of whom have moved on to better situations.

Cons

The first Glassdoor review, from 2009, reads: "Sr Management ranges from incompetent to mean. It is a very hostile, anxious environment. It is very disorganized. There are no clearly defined goals -- let alone guidance toward achieving those goals. Credit is not given where it is due. Also, they will work you like a dog and barely thank you." The same holds true for today, where the upper management has yet to change their ways or leave. The Board is uninterested in the day-to-day, making pleas for change difficult to gain momentum. You will be tempted by the noble mission of the organization to ignore some of these reviews. Barring a thorough shake-up of this org, you will come to see the core of cynicism at the senior level that derails the majority of important work staff tries to accomplish. Most staff receives unfair treatment or scorn to their face or behind their back. Be cautious accepting a role here, knowing that you will work beyond your job description, late hours with low compensation or recognition. If your colleague leaves, expect to be given an entire new program to add to your work load. If you do well, prepare to have your victories sniped by senior staff. If you do poorly, prepare for deeply cynical office politics.

Pros

Lots of real-world writing and research experience, and opportunities to focus on personal writing passions. Loved that I could do the internship remotely.

Cons

I do not have any cons.

Pros

The biggest pro for me working at EDO was they were very flexible on my working hours. I never felt scared to ask for time off if I needed it, and they were always accommodating. I did not interact with many staff members, but everyone I did was nice and helpful. They genuinely seemed to want to ensure I was happy with my internship and getting out of it what I wanted.

Cons

There is limited structure to the actual internship, which means it is up to the individual to make the most of the opportunities in front of them. For me I felt I was able to do that, but I know for many people that is a much harder challenge and may leave them feeling dissatisfied. All of my work was almost entirely independent, especially because the position is hybrid, which meant work did get monotonous at times. You can get college credit for it, but the internship is unpaid, which is less than ideal, especially if your college makes getting credit for internships difficult. Lastly, this is probably not going to be an internship that changes your life. It's a great first internship for an undergraduate student, as EDO hires a lot of students each semester which makes it fairly easy to get accepted, so it can boost a student's resume to get even more prestigious internships. On the flip side, that also means staff cannot get to know you that well, you feel kind of replaceable, and the experience you gain during your internship may not be super unique.
