Pros
1) Get to live in El Dorado County, access to some of the best outdoor recreation in the world. 2) Tons of different project experience, great for a young Planner looking to build their resume. 3) Depending on how low you start in the job classification series, there is room for advancement.
Cons
1) The politics and constituency. The citizens are generally very conservative, poorly educated (conspiracy theories are abundant), and distrustful to downright hostile with government workers. County leadership/management does very little to protect employees from this environment, and the politicians actively make it worse. 2) Your experience can vary wildly depending on which boss you have and what team you're on. Some bosses are excellent and work to get their employees opportunity. More bosses are unaware of what their lower staff experiences day to day, are unorganized, incapable of making decisions, and rely on lower staff to basically do their job for them. 3) You will be overworked. Like most jurisdictions the Planning department is pretty much always overworked and understaffed. 4) Pay is not as competitive as other parts of California.
