Mostly great people, interesting work, big name in the NGO space - Senior Manager Environmental Defense Fund Employee Review

Pros

Some absolutely stellar people--dedicated, smart, collaborative, passionate. Because of its name recognition and reputation, it is relatively well-funded for an NGO.

Cons

Internal politics are no joke. It's hard to advance unless you network with the important people. There are some huge egos in positions of power (alongside some really fantastic people), but even the smart ones don't have enough management training and you end up with great people doing interesting work who have poor management skills. Not across the board, by any means, but if you get stuck in one of those streams, it's very hard to advance your career. Also, regular reorgs make it stressful unless you have a good manager who can insulate you.

Pros

A community of mission-driven staff who truly care about the planet and the causes that EDF advances. Extremely smart and kind staff. Incredible benefits, including a significant amount of company days off (summer Fridays, org shut-down for one week at the end of August, days off include Veteran's Day and Juneteenth); very generous benefits.

Cons

Out-of-touch top leadership, especially Executive Director, who pretends to be authentic and caring but isn't at all.
