Pros

Equity Residential is a REIT with more than 300 communities in 6 major metropolitan area. While there is always the need to perform better than before, when decisions follow the "10 Ways" including "do the right thing," superiors support and assist you. Working with fun, competitive, encouragers from the corporate office to onsite teams. Everyone is encouraged to be optimistic, question authority, test their limits, take educated risks, share knowledge, share the spotlight, all while enjoying the ride. Nerds who have a passion to grow in knowledge, skills, and career are welcome. Transparency, sharing the "why" of decisions, is a refreshing mode of operation at every level at Equity. Best practices, triumphs, struggles, as well as changes in policy and practice are frequently shared in the weekly Huddle that is a blend of onsite team catch-up and company-wide video fireside chats with corporate team members. The employee review process is a helpful, largely objective measure of successes, with input from peers and superiors.

Cons

There is a repository of hundreds, if not thousands, of resources like online education, documents, shared ideas and best practices, that it is overwhelming for a new hire to muddle through.

Pros

Housing discount, strong portfolio exposure, opportunity to work across multiple communities, and valuable experience in a fast-paced leasing environment.

Cons

Management loves to preach “teamwork” until something goes wrong, then suddenly it’s every employee for themselves. Very documentation-heavy culture where certain managers seem to enjoy writing people up more than actually developing talent. Communication is inconsistent, accountability is selective, and favoritism is hard to ignore. Commission structure is shockingly low for the workload and expectations. Leadership often presents itself as organized and supportive, but behind the scenes there’s a lot of blame-shifting, targeting of employees, and policy confusion — especially regarding employee housing and lease transitions. My own experience at the end of my employee lease felt retaliatory and left a very negative impression.
