Pros

Equity Residential has a great approach to the term "Work/Life Balance". They encourage you to take time off when possible because they recognize that the better employees are treated, the quality of work increases. I have never felt more confident in a job as I do working for Equity. I truly feel like I can grow with this company and reach for positions I never thought possible. Equity thrives on promoting from within and cares a lot about experience and less about an unrelated college degree. Many VP's and Corporate employees have started from the ground up in this company/field. There is a reason why Equity is one of the top Property Mangement companies in the U.S - residents appreciate the passion and drive behind the company which starts with the employees. Equity Residential is a remarkable company!

Cons

The employee discount on rent is great, but I do wish that it was a little more in the thriving markets. It is still difficult to afford a lot of the apartments with the discount given.

As our markets have become increasingly competitive and expensive, we have made some adjustments to our employee discount benefit by increasing the overall discount in our most expensive markets, as well as designating at least one community in each market for a higher overall discount. Pros

Housing discount, strong portfolio exposure, opportunity to work across multiple communities, and valuable experience in a fast-paced leasing environment.

Cons

Management loves to preach “teamwork” until something goes wrong, then suddenly it’s every employee for themselves. Very documentation-heavy culture where certain managers seem to enjoy writing people up more than actually developing talent. Communication is inconsistent, accountability is selective, and favoritism is hard to ignore. Commission structure is shockingly low for the workload and expectations. Leadership often presents itself as organized and supportive, but behind the scenes there’s a lot of blame-shifting, targeting of employees, and policy confusion — especially regarding employee housing and lease transitions. My own experience at the end of my employee lease felt retaliatory and left a very negative impression.
