Pros

Friendly and helping coworkers - everyone knows everyone - a small organization Opportunity to learn, ability to work with customers. Nice office setup and kitchen. Free pops, coffee-tea and paid snacks Decent pay and very good insurance health and dental benefit - Matching RRSP contributions and free bus pass/parking Christmas shutdown and Christmas party. Sick days and vacation days. Board games, chess, cards, dart games etc Onsite gym, lots of options for lunch, nearby coffee shops

Cons

Micromanagement lacking ownership - the organization keeps changing directions, process, strategy, team, locations, job contracts, job titles etc Any strategy change comes with team change, process change, desk change, floor change, boss change. Management is of the opinion that anybody-can-do-anything and keep switching roles. You fail and you get the blame, because anybody-can-do-anything!!! Negative office atmosphere; blame games, finding a scapegoat mentality. Practices “Pigs and Chickens” concept of Agile. There is an inside gang in each division; you don't get well with them then good luck. Loyalty, ability, and performance are not respected and considered during evaluation or layoffs. No Work-From-Home(WFH) or flexible timings. Challenging for people with family. Expected to work over the weekends, late nights etc without any overtime pay. Dysfunctional HR department. Layoffs happen by manager escorting people outside the building. HR department is busy coordinating parties, events, games, desk moves and not involved in people issues - You have a problem, go deal with it.

Disappointed you feel this way about the company. As you know, there is a social committee in each location and they organize events and games. HR is not a part of the overall organization of these events. Managers have never escorted anyone outside the building so this is completely incorrect. We try and treat departing employees with respect and give them the opportunity to pack up and say good bye if they are comfortable doing so. In terms of WFH and flexible timing, we allow managers and employees to work out the appropriate schedule. Many employees work from home when they need to and work this out with their manager. Staff with laptops are all equipped with VPN, which works very well to allow people to work from home.

Pros

Nice people, I genuinely enjoyed working with my teammates Relaxed environment, no need to burn out working crazy overtime

Cons

Management is very disorganized, I can relate to the reviewer who said management choices are made by throwing darts at a board. Frequent reorganizations and redirection, I never saw them stick with one strategy long enough to reasonably assess its effectiveness. Penny-wise and pound-foolish, this company is incredibly cheap, refuses to spend money on needed supplies and equipment, on business trips they require use of a rideshare service instead of renting a car even when the rental car would have worked out cheaper. Textbook example of "cargo cult" Agile, focused almost entirely on process despite preaching the Agile mantra of focus on shipping quality software rather than process and tools. Very little oversight or mentoring, flat organization with the intent being self organizing teams leaves very little room for mentoring and career growth. Huge amount of technical debt, bugs and tasks keep getting pushed out to future sprints. Very little QA effort with no comprehensive integration testing leads to poor quality product. Product and internal tool design decisions get passed down from upper management that doesn't actively use the products they are dictating the look and feel of, with complete disregard for the feedback from engineering. No titles, you were a senior engineer with your previous employer? Too bad, these titles do not exist here. Company self describes as a "mature startup" despite being around for some 20 years. Throughout this time they have achieved only enough success to avoid dying.
