Pros
The pay is an advantage but comes with some strings (see cons). The people (for the most part) are quite helpful if you are motivated. Working at fast was a great experience with the right expectations, and being on the tech team is a great way to learn some skills. You will likely learn skills that can help you grow (performance tuning, systems administration, database administration, cyber security). All of the pro's apply if you are highly motivated. On the moving note, YOU WILL BE RELOCATED! Now for me that was a plus, I knew that I could handle a few moves and I wanted to explore the country. There are cons to this, but if you are interested in exploring the US and even some other countries, do it. Relocation is, for the most part, handled. Hotels, rental cars, shipping all your possessions, flights. All and all weigh the pros and cons against your goals, my goals were to have a job out of college, to learn, and to see the country. For a time the pros out weighed the cons... Think deeply about your expectations before accepting a job and consider if working for FAST meets those expectations.
Cons
The pay and benefits are quite good, specifically being paid for time worked over 40 hours per week (bonus time). That being said the ability to work more is frequently used for techs. There is lots of work that needs to be taken care of after hours and if you are not careful consume your life. But hey you're getting extra money ;P If you want work life balance, expect that sometimes the scale will be heavily weighted towards work. Working in a more technical position it was quite frustrating for me that all of their software is completely proprietary (aside from SQL Server Management studio & Visual Studio). There are some places to communicate with the rest of the company, but for most things in the technical realm you will need to reach out to someone directly. Sometimes their response is the equivalent of submit a ticket. In most cases if maintaining your programming stills is a goal it's not going to happen at work. Being that my role as a tech was not a development position, this was expected. Still think it might be important to note. Relocation, can be a monumental undertaking. FAST uses some external contractors that handle relocating you... The entire process might be handled, but sometimes it feels like a never ending game of telephone (if your rep answers the phone). The process itself can be exhausting along with the fact that you need to work as this all happens around you. When it goes well, all is good... but there are lots of moving pieces in a relocation so keep that in mind. You can be asked to move more often than the 3-4 years that fast says is their avg. I worked for the company for a bit over 2 years and moved twice, along with many other folks. As the companies products and markets shift the people working outside of headquarters will be in flux. All and all weigh the pros and cons against your goals, my goals were to have a job out of college, to learn, and to see the country. For a time the pros out weighed the cons... Think deeply about your expectations before accepting a job and consider if working for FAST meets those expectations.
