Pros

There is no shortage of available hours to work, strong brand and marketing (coupons, etc.) drive customers through the doors seven days a week. Solid employee discount programs for your own auto care needs. Benefits, such as the 401k match, are actually worth your investment.

Cons

Long hours, mandatory overtime and working through holidays and weekends. It's retail and you better be prepared to devote most of your life, up to 60+ hours each and every week, to Firestone. Starting pay is low, as the company expects a four-year degree from their sales staff, yet they pay those of us that have earned our degrees only slightly above the minimum wage here in California. Stores are often short-handed and this results in the customer waiting far too long for even the most basic of auto services to be completed. This also creates an atmosphere of "order taking", in which the customer fails to receive the level of care and attention to detail that they are paying good money for in order to make room for the next ticket on the wall. This results in missed sales opportunities for those of us that are measured by these metrics, as the backlog of tickets created by the high demand placed upon the skeleton crews in both the "front" and "back" of the shop delay even the most basic of services (oil changes, tire services, etc.) Technicians are often juggling tasks between two or more vehicles at any given time and when they finally present their suggestions for additional repairs/maintenance to those of us on the front end to sell to the customer, the customer is less likely to add/buy those services because they have been made to wait longer than a reasonable amount of time for the completion of the work they came in for to begin with. If your oil change took two hours to be completed, would you be willing to wait even longer for a new set of tires or brakes? As a new customer that is visiting a Firestone location for the first time, would you return to a shop that spent over two hours to complete your oil change?
