Good mission, decent benefits, favoritism, bad culture - Operations Flexport Employee Review

Pros

I really believe the mission and market fit are fantastic. The company hires some very intelligent and diverse talent, where one can find many friends. The catered lunches are a nice perk as well, plus being dog friendly.

Cons

The work is very transactional, despite countless promises to automate. There aren’t as many career opportunities as advertised, with most interesting positions filled by outside hires as they come up. There’s a glass ceiling to manager and those who make it are often favorites or cheerleaders to the company. Candor, despite being a core value, will result in negative attention and pushback. This can also show up on your performance reviews (including asking why involuntary compensation changes are made). The work life balance is also tough, with unspoken pressures to not work from home and always be accessible via slack and email.

Pros

The compensation was strong and competitive, and it was consistently the best part of the job. If your priority is pay in the near term, that piece delivered.

Cons

I struggled with the lack of stability. It rarely felt like the ground was solid, and that uncertainty was hard to sit with over time. Return-to-office expectations seemed to change more than once, and I personally didn't find the reasoning behind those shifts clear. It was hard to plan around. I also found the performance review process difficult to trust. In my experience the outcomes didn't always seem to line up with the actual work, which made it hard to feel like I knew where I stood or how to grow. There was A LOT of turnover in leadership during my time there. With direction changing frequently, it often felt like priorities were in flux, which made it next to impossible to stay oriented.
