Pros

- CEO is one of the best and is a totally down to earth guy and he trusts us and keeps us up to date with everything that is going on - We are working on a cutting edge product that is helping sustain and promote continued quality journalism across the publishing industry - Team is smart, hard working, collaborative, with a good balance between experienced and more junior team members. - Product is best of the best and getting better every day - Partner with world class publishers and partners - Some of the best investors any young company could ask for - Office space is flat so you can't tell whose who based on where they sit - Very casual dress. People only dress up on the sales team when they are visiting publishers and partners. - Lots of perks like three meals a day during intense work seasons; free drinks and snacks including organic fresh fruit, vegetables, hummus and other unique dips - Across the street from Whole Foods where there is an endless selection of snacks, salad bar, sushi, sandwiches, hot buffet, coffee/smoothie bar, and more - Peets, Philz, Fraiche (Blue Bottle Coffee), and Le Boulange all within short walking distance where you can get amazing fresh roasted coffee drinks - Downtown Palo Alto, where there are tons of restaurants of all types in case you want to go out - 7 minute walk to CalTrain and Palo Alto is a bullet stop so it's a quick 35 minutes from San Francisco - Bike friendly and onsite bike storage. Flipboard will even buy you a bike lock. - Very competitive/generous compensation for a start-up which I guess they do to attract top talent - Everyone gets equity (stock options) - Reimburse cell phones and tablet data since we all test the product - We watch major sporting events together. World Cup was a great team event. Though no one feels pressured to join if that's not their thing. - Balanced so people can eat dinner with their SO's and/or families and not feel guilty about it - Unlimited vacation and time off. People mostly respect it and use it for time away refresh and come back with even more energy. - High energy/exciting work environment - Everyone has a voice and can 1:1 time with anyone in the company no matter their level or title. As I said, it's very flat here. - I love it and wouldn't want to work anywhere else, at least not right now. Too much going on that's exciting. - Lots of opportunity to initiate anything whether a social activity or other. We are definitely a start-up. - We have our very own basketball team and play in a local league. - We have a fun office in New York! - Open grill in the summers in Palo Alto - really fun time when we each pick up our own meat from whole foods about once a week and grill it up and eat with all the other grillers - Good enough video conferencing so we can keep in touch with remotes

Cons

- Not a good place for people who don't work well on teams. Flipboard is all about team collaboration and not for people who want credit just for themselves and become bitter when they don't get it. - If you are a soft drink or energy drink addict, you'll need to bring your own to work. Company provides no free cokes or rock stars/red bulls - only free healthy drinks including almond, soy and regular milks, sparkling water, iced tea, flavored waters, regular water, Philz and Peets coffee, and about a dozen kinds of tea. It's helped me keep my weight in check. - If you want your own full time office with a door, this may not be the place for you. It's an open work environment. Though there are plenty of conference rooms, other buildings and places to hide away if you need quiet time and they'll let you work from home if you are heads down on a project. - If you are a Windows/PC guy/woman, you will probably feel out of place. Flipboard is a Mac shop and looks kind of like an Apple Store when you walk in. Though probably half of us have Android phones. - If you're looking for an office walking distance from home and live in SF, probably better to find a job in SF. Like I said the train ride is fast and Flipboard reimburses 100% of our CalTrain.

Pros

The experience helped me learn what I want to avoid in a future workplace.

Cons

I honestly struggled to find many positives about my experience. The owner was unpredictable and could quickly turn a normal day into a stressful one. Employees were expected to deal with the fallout while management carried on as if nothing happened. Pay was disappointing, benefits were limited, and it often seemed like keeping costs low mattered more than taking care of the people doing the work. Advancement rarely went to the most deserving employees. Being connected to the right people seemed to matter far more than performance or effort. The workload was another major issue. Long hours became normal, and personal time was often sacrificed to keep up with demands. There was very little respect for work life balance, especially when client requests piled up. Burnout was common, and employees were simply expected to keep pushing through it. What more frustrating was the gap between what the company said and what it actually did. Leadership loved talking about growth and big ideas, but daily operations told a different story. Teams worked in silos and collaboration was far weaker than advertised. A lot of effort went into appearances while many internal problems were ignored. In the end, employees were treated more like numbers than people. Contributions went unnoticed, morale stayed low, and the culture became increasingly difficult to tolerate. The company spent a lot of time promoting itself as a great place to work, but that image did not match my experience. Looking back, I wish I had paid closer attention to the warning signs before joining.
