Graduate TA/RA - Graduate Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant Florida State University Employee Review

Pros

I had a manageable number of students and valued the opportunity to teach in graduate school. The faculty members in my department are highly regarded in my field. I'll discuss pay more in the cons, but I appreciated the tuition waiver and health insurance. School spirit and morale was generally high.

Cons

I was paid the minimum assistantship stipend, hardly enough for groceries each month and certainly not a competitive wage. As a full-time student with an assistantship and another part-time job, I was overworked and exhausted for most of my time there. I often felt that my department was not valued by the university.

Pros

Great first job out of undergrad. Pay was decent and benefits were GREAT. Lots of opportunities to build connections in other departments and grow within the University. Good job security.

Cons

If you end up with poor management, the poor job security becomes a bad thing. It takes forever for a bad seed to get removed and this effected morale during my time here.
