Smaller paycheck but HUGE benefits - Graduate Assistant Florida State University Employee Review

Pros

As a graduate assistant, you may not be making a ton of money, but in almost all cases you will receive at least a partial tuition waiver, which is a huge benefit to the job. Whether or not the job is low-stress depends on the professor you're assigned to, but generally it doesn't occupy too much time and you're able to focus on your studies.

Cons

The pay is not fully commensurate to Tallahassee's cost of living so you will have to live a very frugal lifestyle.

Pros

Great opportunity to build real-world equity research and financial analysis skills. Supportive and knowledgeable faculty who are willing to mentor students. Flexible schedule that works well alongside coursework. Strong exposure to company valuation, financial modeling, and investment research. Collaborative environment with motivated and ambitious peers. Excellent resume builder for students pursuing finance, investment banking, or asset management. Opportunities to present research and improve public speaking skills. Encourages independent thinking and critical analysis of businesses. Hands-on experience using financial statements and market research. Valuable networking opportunities with faculty, alumni, and finance professionals. Gain experience working on projects that mirror real industry work. Good balance of autonomy and guidance throughout projects.

Cons

As a student position, advancement opportunities are limited, and workloads can vary depending on project deadlines. Much of the learning is self-directed, so success requires taking initiative. Compensation is modest compared to private-sector finance internships.

Pros

Great first job out of undergrad. Pay was decent and benefits were GREAT. Lots of opportunities to build connections in other departments and grow within the University. Good job security.

Cons

If you end up with poor management, the poor job security becomes a bad thing. It takes forever for a bad seed to get removed and this effected morale during my time here.
