Graduate Assistant - Graduate Assistant Florida State University Employee Review

Pros

A lot of the pros and cons at FSU depend on which department you work in, who you are with, and so on. But in terms of university-wide benefits, I found the stipend reasonable, and the health care excellent. Conditions improved dramatically after Graduate Assistants United gained collective bargaining rights.

Cons

Because Florida is a right-to-work state, the GA union was struggling for support while I was there. Relationship between GA's and the University was generally good, but sometimes FSU did not share information to which the union was entitled. Another disadvantage depends on your department, but it seemed common: Like all too many universities, work-life balance is not given as high a priority as it should be in many cases.

Pros

Great benefits, excellent retirement options, generous leave, and strong job stability. The campus environment is welcoming, and there are opportunities for professional development and continuing education. The work is meaningful, and many departments foster a collaborative atmosphere with a good work-life balance.

Cons

Salaries can be lower than comparable positions in the private sector, and hiring, promotions, and other administrative processes can move slowly due to university policies. Budget constraints may affect raises and staffing, and parking can be challenging depending on your work location.
