Teaching Faculty I - Teaching Faculty I Florida State University Employee Review

Pros

It is a job. There are few things to enjoy about it.

Cons

Starting salary is the lowest in Florida with little upward mobility. Additional job requirements can be added at anytime with no additional pay increase. Despite being fiscally dependent upon the tuition of the large student body in the liberal arts courses, the research faculty is treated like gods over the mere mortal teachers, making double and triple salaries. For example, a teaching faculty member is lucky to be given a $500 merit raise, while a tenure faculty member can receive a $5,000 discretionary increase in salary on top of a larger merit raise. In short, FSU perpetuates the wealth inequality gap without shame for its immoral practices. I would avoid this job at all costs.

Pros

Great benefits, excellent retirement options, generous leave, and strong job stability. The campus environment is welcoming, and there are opportunities for professional development and continuing education. The work is meaningful, and many departments foster a collaborative atmosphere with a good work-life balance.

Cons

Salaries can be lower than comparable positions in the private sector, and hiring, promotions, and other administrative processes can move slowly due to university policies. Budget constraints may affect raises and staffing, and parking can be challenging depending on your work location.
