Pros
-Easy job, if you're remotely competent they will entrust you with your duties and stay out of your way. -Good mix of talent from HS diploma to Master's degree holders in various positions throughout the company. Company preference is to promote from within. -Not a debt ridden company, they own all their equipment and buy other companies regularly.
Cons
-Management is akin to "the knights of the round table" except nowhere near as legendary. What I mean by that is there is not a good mix of intel present, no operations people get to decide much of anything. -Extremely hard to move up, it's almost like a union job. They will literally only fire you if you sexually harass someone or fail your terminal audit. Not for being incompetent or lazy though. -For NASDAQ traded company you would think there would be more uniformity from terminal to terminal. Each office is ran based on the personality of the Terminal Manager. One office closes at 5pm, another at 10pm. Some answer emails, some offices don't at all, some answer the phones others don't. For a company that brands itself as an industry leader they don't structure their work standards or values like leaders of other industries (Apple, Amazon, Starbucks, McDonalds, etc.). -Comfort and familiarity is valued over talent and work ethic. -Company is purely ran based off of YOY & WOW numbers. This is a problem because for example let's say in 2009 business is booming because of a Toyota account, 2010 the business is gone so it's a bad year, 2011 can go down on paper as being a "good year" because 2011 beat 2010's numbers even though revenues are down from 2009. They really don't push for growth, and have an attitude towards customers that says "oh we lost that account? Don't worry they'll come back". This isn't based on offering better services but because they buy up their competitors and virtually have no competition. -Sales structure is odd, they all get a salary. If they acquire a $20 million dollar account do they get a bonus for that? Nope, just their salary. If they suck for 10 years and never bring on any new business but the customers don't complain to corporate are they fired for not producing any SALES? Nope. -Disproportionately structured from an operational level. Almost at a 2:1 clip, there are WAY too many office personnel. One person does "emails", one person does "internationals", another answers the "phones". Imagine someone at Starbucks literally not knowing how to make a drink, it's that bad! -Meanwhile the cargo handlers have 30-40 measurements of performance and safety that they have to adhere to, they're judged on time, accuracy, and quality but are ALWAYS minimally staffed and minimally paid but they along with the company drivers, handle 100% of the business. -Lots of hours, 50-60 is normal for about 4 months a year, 60+ for the other 8 months. EVERY year for salaried managers. -Women beware, prepare to be objectified to the max!
