Pros

One of the main reasons I joined was the opportunity for technical growth. It's really delivered. There are endless interesting problems to engage with, and enough people that someone can point you in the right direction when solving a problem but few enough that you really get to own your solution. I feel that my work is directly aligned with the success of the product. High performing staff. Strong leadership who are transparent and accessible. This is helped by our scientific approach to decisions based on shared data. For example, we review all company survey results and responses at quarterly company-wide meetings. Looooong runway from venture capital already raised makes this among the lowest risk startups you could work for. (Pro: we're operating at full speed in the pandemic. Con: long runway can drive complacency since it decouples your actions from the company's survival.)

Cons

Low marks for diversity. We're 90% male and 90% white. Unfortunately, that's typical for a lot of tech companies. Low marks for direct "social good" impact, if that's what you're looking for. We solve business problems. Our work isn't going to save the world, but it is going to save/make other people money, and make us money, and we're going to learn a ton along the way.

Pros

If you learn by getting your hands dirty, this is an ideal place to learn everything in the tech stack and how huge companies think about making decisions with data. Strong startup culture allowing for early ownership of work and making changes to how the company operates No-one is a cog in the number-generating machine. People in Data and Software roles are also heavily involved in designing the work they do Great for senior technical staff who want more ownership and to engage in continual development unhindered by the slow response time of an enterprise company. Great place for generalists who could solve operational problems, write code, or do deep research. Lots of funding and diverse stock options make this a low-risk high-reward startup. People get to work on portfolio companies as suits their skills and interests A lot of time with the company founders allows staff to learn a lot about how 30+ year tech & C-suite veterans operate.

Cons

We are very focused on the best next-step in each AI system, and getting better results every week. While this is good (and a breath of fresh air for anyone who has watched a larger company stagnate), there is room for us to get more benefit from long-term research tasks or formalising our internal knowledge to help new hires learn faster. The most senior technical staff are stretched thin. They do great work and are supportive of their teams, but they each have FAR more than a full-time roles' worth of responsibility.
