work a lot of hours...responsibilities and workload can increase, but not your salary. Not very many years with annual merit pays....always seem to be reducing headcount here or there (layoff- - not fired), which is either poor management planning, loss of revenue or focused on meeting budgetary goals vs employee morale (you never know who is next, regardless of your performance).
