Pros

Excellent mission, really good committed people and overall it is a worthy organization to exist and to support. Across the board, rank and file staff are good natured and committed. Much better for people who are entering the workforce, have been underemployed or have few skills.

Cons

Not a good place for a senior level professional in a field office. Their growing structure is to create affiliate offices around the country. They bank on volunteers, interns and AmeriCorps for the bulk of the work, not giving many an opportunity for growth and advancement. System wide pay is purposely set at 80% of market, claiming it is the nonprofit way, yet HQ senior management people make $100,000 - $200,000 each. The founders are disconnected from field office staff and mostly engage through a company blog. All HR services are handled out of HQ which keeps the company line and cannot mediate local issues. Many people in Development and Communications have had only one related job in their history and they are inhospitable to others more senior in experience.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We agree that our mission is excellent and that so many of our employees are committed to the work. We are sorry that your perceptions and experience at GRID did not match our desired experience for all of our employees. We now have ongoing surveys where we request feedback from all employees to ensure we are creating a positive work experience, our HR teams are spread across the country and regularly visit local offices and check in with employees. As a nonprofit our salaries are less competitive than for profit companies, but we do our best to compensate fairly and offer great benefits. We encourage you to email us should you wish to discuss further. Thank you for your time and feedback!

Pros

Flexibility, benefits, fair pay, promoting from within, meaningful work, good culture, people who care.

Cons

Job security is somewhat variable because it depends on funding, which has big swings. Meeting practices could be improved.

Pros

people in my region were nice to work with

Cons

they talk a lot about good work culture and openness from the higher ups but then turned around and laid off 20% of their staff on a random friday with absolutely no notice. they restructured the entire company which supposedly they've been planning since february of this year. they laid off valuable employees who worked at this company for 15+ years!!!!! with zero remorse and sympathy.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are truly sorry for the experience you’ve had and for the difficult circumstances surrounding the recent layoffs. As many know, GRID Alternatives was heavily impacted by an unexpected withdrawal of funding, which significantly affected our operations. Because of this sudden change, we were faced with the incredibly difficult decision to reduce staff. We understand how challenging this has been for everyone involved, and we want to express our sincere appreciation for your contributions to GRID Alternatives. We provided a severance package and ongoing outplacement services to support our laid-off staff during this transition. We are here for you in the aftermath. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to support you during this difficult time and can be reached at hr@gridalternatives.org. Wishing you the best.
