Pros

Working with brilliant people: The opportunity to collaborate with highly skilled, intelligent, and inspiring professionals is both motivating and enriching. Additionally, a career at Gartner allows for significant professional growth and provides the chance to build a robust network by accessing high-level decision-makers, including C-level executives. The exposure to these influential individuals is invaluable for career advancement and industry insights. Exceptional support teams: Customer Success Managers (CSMs) are highly committed and efficient, making client management smoother. Additionally, Gartner's team of qualified experts is a significant asset for advising and supporting clients effectively. Training and skill development: Gartner provides well-structured training programs that enable rapid skill enhancement, essential for excelling in such a demanding role. Competitive benefits: Attractive salaries, effective reimbursement of expenses, and strong marketing support make the job rewarding. The solutions offered to clients are also compelling and help facilitate sales.

Cons

Excessive Pressure: The role comes with a high and often disproportionate level of pressure. When performance figures are slightly below expectations (not bad, just below forecast), middle management often protects itself by blaming local Account Managers for underperformance, even when external factors are responsible. Junior Account Managers are particularly vulnerable, with some being dismissed in less than a year because a client, previously managed by another AE, decides not to renew their subscription. Instead of recognizing the situation as inherited, the AE is held responsible and terminated. Political Environment and Favoritism: A culture of favoritism within middle management leads to unfair redistribution of client accounts to favored colleagues. For example, an AE who has developed and grown a client account over several years might lose it simply because the manager decides to reassign it to a preferred colleague. Even senior AEs with excellent KPIs can find themselves terminated, not because of performance issues, but due to personal dislike from their manager. Financial Responsibility for Client Non-Renewals: If a client decides not to renew their subscription, the Account Manager is expected to compensate for the financial gap by securing equivalent revenue elsewhere, regardless of the circumstances or the client’s history. Limited Prospecting Opportunities: Account Managers have very few opportunities to acquire new clients. They are typically assigned a handful of accounts (often referred to as a "shit list") consisting of former clients who have no interest in engaging with Gartner again. New account openings and proactive prospecting are exclusively managed by Business Developers, leaving little to no room for AEs to expand their portfolio. Inconsistent Remote Work Policies: Gartner’s remote work and international working policies are applied inconsistently. Some employees are allowed to work from abroad without issue, while others, doing the exact same thing, face disciplinary action or pushback from their management. This inconsistency creates frustration and a sense of inequity among employees. Blame Culture in Difficult Contexts: In situations where results fall slightly short of expectations, middle management often shifts the blame to local Account Managers to avoid taking accountability. This has resulted in new hires being terminated within their first year, even when they face challenging client or territory conditions. Lack of Management Support: Middle management rarely supports Account Managers during critical moments, such as closing meetings. Junior AEs, in particular, often find themselves handling high-stakes deals alone because their managers are unavailable due to personal matters, No Company Culture: With most sales staff working remotely and offices largely empty, there is virtually no sense of company culture, cohesion, or mutual support. The environment feels highly individualistic, where employees are left to fend for themselves in a "survival of the fittest" mentality. Client Harassment: Clients are overwhelmed by constant messages from marketing and repeated invitations to events, making it difficult for local AEs to build relationships or secure meetings. Furthermore, middle management advises AEs to approach C-level executives directly without appointments, which is ineffective and culturally inappropriate, particularly in markets like Switzerland. Vacation Restrictions: Account Managers are prohibited from taking leave during the final four months of the year, the critical closing period. This rigid policy makes it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance. High Risk of Termination: Employees must be aware of the risk of being dismissed abruptly, often for unclear reasons tied to internal politics or favoritism. Even high-performing employees are not immune. Experts, who play a critical role in client strategies, are heavily solicited and often overburdened. This makes it challenging for clients to receive timely responses or quick advice when needed. The delays and limited availability negatively impact the overall client experience and hinder the Account Manager's ability to deliver effective results.

Pros

Totally remote and the hours that you work can be flexible. The other designers are very friendly and willing to help you out when solving problems. The company provides you with equipment to work with. They also forbid the use of AI in their presentations with is extremely respectable.

Cons

You are paid based on billable hours. Management is strict about how much time you spend on each project, but you also have to make sure to meet a quota of billable hours each week. It can be hard to find a balance and the time counting down while working is stressful.
