The leadership has been actively trying to balance out reviews on Glassdoor, so be wary of what you read.
Here’s the truth from someone with a lot of prior experience in The public, private and non-profit sector. All organizations have their issues. But this one, sadly, is truly toxic.
The culture problem is at the top. I take the CEO at her word that she wants to improve it. Unfortunately, the leadership that sit between her and the low level managers and staff have no interest or incentive to improve and are in fact the core of the problem. The CEO and the trustees will never be allowed to see the truth or how the organization functions. HR helps enforce this dysfunction rather than actively addressing it as a real HR shop would. And everyone else is afraid to speak up.
Such a shame, as the mission is so compelling and the opportunith and urgency vast. You have great colleagues — but if they speak out, they “disappear” - suddenly they are gone. Fired, resigned, who knows. But I’ve never seen people leave so suddenly and inexplicably. The people wih substance leave within a few years almost withou exception. Especially if they are women.
If you choose to go there, know that you should trust no one. Seems dramatic, but it is true. All organizations have their flaws. Managers throw their staff under the bus constantly. There are some exceptions, but it is more the norm than not.
