Pros

Generally, the people here are wonderful--smart, friendly and genuinely hard-working with solid work ethics. The new modern building is fabulous along with all the extra perks that came with it including a gym, open, bright spaces, free beers, sodas, etc. The customers are fantastic—fun, energetic and willing to work as partners in research and development. Along with the customers comes the industries that the company supports—zoos, museums, amusement parks, tourist attractions--what’s not to love there? The benefits and salaries are pretty much on par if not a little better than other software development organizations. There is a decent push for work-life balance with flexible schedules and the ability to work from home. On paper, this place rocks. However…

Cons

For such a small organization with so many friendly people, there is an amazing lack of support among the teams and a definite feeling of “every man for himself”. Executive Leadership is more interested in finger pointing, placing blame, and accounting for every minute of every day than they seem concerned with moving the product and the company forward. There is a serious micro-management problem which in turn leads to a serious lack of collaboration, motivation, innovation and energy. Politics runs rampant—if you are well-liked, any outrageous behavior will be tolerated including acting rude and aggressive toward your coworkers. But, if you step out of line with some small imagined infraction and find yourself suddenly not part of the cool kids table anymore, you can be sure you’ll be made to suffer until you either quit or get fired. Recently the company has lost quite a few strong, competent, motivating leaders who could really have made a difference in culture. However, those proven leaders who have come on-board have quickly realized that open, honest feedback is not appreciated and skill sets and wisdom that were hard-earned elsewhere have no place to be put into practice here. It's really a pity, too, since this place certainly has the capacity and potential to be a great place to work.

Pros

None worth calling out or mentioning.

Cons

After working at Gateway for several years now, I can honestly say this is the worst company I’ve worked for in my career. The place is chaotic, reactive, and draining. There is not enough clear direction, ownership is often messy, and people spend way too much time trying to figure out who is supposed to do what. The company talks about process, but it does not feel consistent. Things are vague until there is a problem, then suddenly everything turns into blame and extra scrutiny. That gets old fast. Management makes the environment harder than it needs to be. There is a lot of checking in, questioning, and asking for updates, but not enough actual support or clear decision-making. It creates stress without solving the underlying issues. Teams do not seem aligned, communication is poor, and employees end up carrying the weight of bad planning. A lot of problems feel completely avoidable. I would not recommend working here. It is not a stable or healthy environment, and the company seems unwilling to admit how much of the frustration comes from the way it operates.
