Toxic, Micromanagement, but Good Pay - Front Line Supervisor General Dynamics Bath Iron Works Employee Review

Pros

Good pay, acceptable benefits. Cool product if that matters to you. Sometimes the coworkers are good but that really depends on where you are.

Cons

Pay is no longer as competitive as they think it is. They’re stuck in the past in regards to WFH, work-life balance. They trip over dollars to save pennies. Micromanagement is a way of life here — they do this because focusing on ultimately inconsequential things like going to lunch “too early” is easier than actually addressing why everyone sprints to their cars once core hours are over. Front line supervision is beat down by both union and company middle and upper leadership. Zero support, very little opportunity for professional growth. You definitely get the sense that you’re on your own as a front line leader. Front line leaders have zero decision making power but are held accountable when decisions they did not make inevitably don’t pan out. No such thing as mentorship if you’re not in the in-group. Individual contributors (mechanics, clerks) receive better benefits/pay than their supervisors. For about half of them, becoming a FLS is a pay and benefit cut.
