Great place to work! - Doctoral Student Georgetown University Employee Review

Pros

Very good for women seeking a family-friendly environment, lots of room for promotion. There is very little parking though, so it makes it difficult to commute. Shuttle buses are available between Dupont Circle and Rosslyn Metro Stops. The campus is small but vernice and you will find that you get to know people quickly. Generally if your work is good you will get recognition in the form of promotion or compensation. Although for the cost of living the stipend is low, students have other advantages. One is that professors are available often on an "open door" policy to answer any questions/concerns.

Cons

D.C. is a very expensive city; salaries are average. Many students must get second jobs to make ends meet or they have spousal support. However Georgetown is well recognized in the research community so job opportunities are not too difficult to come by after graduation. Often students complete their post-docs at NIH, National Academies of Science, or other prestigious institutions. The only other down-side is that funding is always tight. All students are required to write and submit at least one grant during their training. On the flip side, this is good training for the future life as a scientist.
