Pros
Better than average benefits. For those with offices on the Georgia Tech campus, the surroundings are relaxing. Appealing to be able to share that your employer is Georgia Tech/Georgia Tech Research Institute.
Cons
Very limited pay raises with a cap set at 14% for those salary increases for promotions. Promotions tend to be very limited for those in IT. Lack of transparency for salary increases, promotions, appraisals. GTRI is not strong on a published path for upward mobility or promotions. GTRI management has strong tendency to be career employees who lack strong values and an effort to improve matters. Too much about accepting current practices/processes as “good enough”. Very unwilling to rock the boat. Entrenched management with a pronounced slant for hiring Georgia Tech graduates; GTRI is the largest employer of Georgia Tech graduates. For those projects which are IT applications, management is not open to IT best practices as followed by for profit industries. IT management is unaware of their own shortcomings. HR is crippled entity with a self belief that HR is leading edge (not true). HR is very slow at taking any actions including hiring and conversion of contractors to permanent status. For non-IT positions and pure research, GTRI may be an acceptable employer.
