Obtuse - it's not just an angle between 90 and 180 degrees. - Manager Golden 1 Credit Union Employee Review

Pros

Simply put, the pros are this: 1.) There are good people among the rank-and-file, and 2.) you have plenty of opportunity to do work outside of your job description. Many see Item 2 as a problem - but, that's how you grow, people.

Cons

The executives are filled with "geometric angles." See what I did there? Many senior executives lack intellectual curiosity, or are just plain lazy, if they are not interested in the departments they are in charge of. The culture, mission statement, and corporate directives lack sincerity and transparency. The executives are afraid to disagree with the CEO, and the CEO is more interested in appearance than substance. I found that it is better to be favored than competent at the Credit Union. This is a consistent theme and a top to bottom problem. Many departments pass the buck - they do not take responsibility for work, and look to punt whenever they can. The departments most notorious for this are the "favored." They pass the buck then take credit for providing "solutions." The competent do the work so as not to pass the member along In more than twelve years of employment, I had seven bosses and was tossed around like a dirty sponge. Only two of my bosses were worthy of their position, the first left within two months and the second just over a year.

Pros

The pay is decent and there are some very skilled people working in the department.

Cons

The workloads are unrealistic at times particularly when someone is out of office for an extended period of time. Month end tends to be very busy and you will be expected to work additional hours most days if you are salaried. Management attitude shifted in the last few years. Performance expectations are very subjected and higher ratings are gated across the organization with the highest level being essentially out of reach for non leadership positions. Many talented people have recently left the department in a short period of time causing workloads to be redistributed rather than seeking new staff in a timely manner. A large number of key department processes sit with a single person with minimal at best documentation of their procedures. You may be expected to reverse engineer some of the annual or quarterly processes with minimal guidance after seeing the process one once or twice.
