Pros

-Depending on your group, you can easily have a great work/life balance. -Pretty strong job security, the good developers generally do not stay very long so if you're skilled then you won't really have to worry much about it. -People are generally very nice. -Advancement is pretty much standard until you hit middle management so there's a lot of transparency in career progression.

Cons

-Pay is low for a software engineer job but above market for an IT support job, so it's not too bad if you have just a general engineering degree and not know a lot about programming. Don't be fooled into thinking that back office tech pay is going to be much better than other back office positions though. -Culture isn't that great to be honest. Since there isn't any profits/loss to show for performance, you'll encounter poor performing workers who just talks the talk. When things go wrong, it becomes a battle of egos and office politics instead of real honestly and working together. Level of trust is low between different teams because of it. It's very shocking how low the bar can go when simple programming issues gets turned into a magnitude of solving world peace.
