life changing - Project Manager Granite Construction Employee Review

Pros

Good place to start in transportation construction industry to learn project management (if they were hiring that is). They provide good benefits: health, dental, vision, sometimes matching 401K, company vehicle, private office, project engineer support.

Cons

Not a very diverse company. The lack of diversity has hurt Granite. They rely almost entirely on public works transportation projects in their construction division. Many other transportation contractors do a wide variety of work scopes, which makes them more versatile in the industry. This company claims to embrace new and better innovative ways of doing things, but the reality is trying to get people to change to modern technology is difficult. There is a disconnect on processes and technology between the Granite offices. The health benefits are okay if you're in perfect health, young and single. They're lacking especially in dental for any group. The 401K has little of anything worth investing in. Be expected to find out hidden expectations. Many managers often do not communicate best practices very well. There are hidden audio surveillance/GPS monitors in company vehicles and managers do listen. They share spy audio with other mangers and various other employees, which can literally destroy the life of the person being spied on. Some managers are border line psychopaths and will destroy their perceived enemies. Have seen it done. This is a good place to start, but many times not a good place to finish your career. Surviving at Granite means winning a popularity contest everyday. Know the signs and when to get out of this company, if they will let you. Many people I have seen leave Granite get poor reviews from their managers.

Pros

- company car - well paid

Cons

- management does not communicate at all. They expect you to mind read and meet their expectations perfectly, even while in training like a seasoned veteran . If you don’t, they will fire you with no explanation and a smile on their face. - no formal training program; I was supposed to be trained for 6 months and they cut it 2.5 months and seemed to have held me to the standards of my trainer who had been with the company for over 40 years. I say seemed because again, no communication! - passive aggressive phone calls; management won’t communicate but they do love to call you and make it your fault when they’re having a bad day. - Lack of respect; i was interviewed by 3 of the managers and I could tell which ones chose me/liked me and which ones didn’t. Any recommendations I had to make dispatching smoother fell on deaf ears as I was not taken seriously or treated as a member of the team. It was clear my boss had not chosen me, but was “stuck” with me and was prepping to fire me from the moment training was done. - overtime all day; my day started at 5AM, but I could easily work until 7PM because none of the foreman/superintendents would give me their schedules until 4-5PM if at all despite every day I asked for them between 9-10AM and instead of holding them accountable, my boss told me “that’s just the way it is” which I don’t believe because we were the only region with this problem. Gotta love a boys' club!
