Pros

At one time this was a very good company to work for; the benefits were good and the training received by employees was worth its weight in gold. Branch offices had a family atmosphere and everyone worked together to get the job done. Communications were good and you knew what was expected of you.

Cons

This is no longer a good company to work for. The cuts that this company have made in order to stay competitive in the industry have hitten the employees in the field right in the pocket; while certain areas, management, have continued business as usual. Money wasted on new computer system that required more research prior to implementing in the field has caused a lot of extra work and stress on a workforce already stressed beyond its limits. There is no longer a family like atmosphere; they have divided the company into a departmental nightmare. No one takes the lead in decision making; and everyone in the field suffers the consequences. Communications is almost nonexistent; too much information about things that don't matter, and not enough about what you need to know in order to get your job done. This company has lost a lot of good employees and will continue to do so unless there is a swift change in the management team and the way they treat the employees. People will only take so much for so long. Yes there is life after Granite!!

Pros

- company car - well paid

Cons

- management does not communicate at all. They expect you to mind read and meet their expectations perfectly, even while in training like a seasoned veteran . If you don’t, they will fire you with no explanation and a smile on their face. - no formal training program; I was supposed to be trained for 6 months and they cut it 2.5 months and seemed to have held me to the standards of my trainer who had been with the company for over 40 years. I say seemed because again, no communication! - passive aggressive phone calls; management won’t communicate but they do love to call you and make it your fault when they’re having a bad day. - Lack of respect; i was interviewed by 3 of the managers and I could tell which ones chose me/liked me and which ones didn’t. Any recommendations I had to make dispatching smoother fell on deaf ears as I was not taken seriously or treated as a member of the team. It was clear my boss had not chosen me, but was “stuck” with me and was prepping to fire me from the moment training was done. - overtime all day; my day started at 5AM, but I could easily work until 7PM because none of the foreman/superintendents would give me their schedules until 4-5PM if at all despite every day I asked for them between 9-10AM and instead of holding them accountable, my boss told me “that’s just the way it is” which I don’t believe because we were the only region with this problem. Gotta love a boys' club!
