Pros

Excellent benefit package compared with other companies that I've been around. Granite also seems to see the value in giving it's employees the latest technology to do their jobs. Company vehicles are almost always well maintained and relatively new. It's easy to build up a lot of vacation since you're so busy all the time, but when the time comes that you need to take some time away from the job management seems mostly supportive. My experiences were very positive with the HCD division, but I cannot say the same for the Branch division. I was not around them that much but the little bit that I was around them left me with a bad taste in my mouth

Cons

Don't plan on getting a promotion anytime soon, Granite appears to be downsizing the company. The major reorganization seems to be failing, and people are leaving the company at a fast rate. Branch management seems to have no interest in keeping former HCD employees around. If you like large projects, and cutting edge construction, look somewhere else, because Granite is now more of a "pickup truck" contractor, only interested in competing with Mom and Pop contractors to pave a parking lot, and nothing more. If you're looking for an exciting challenging career in civil engineering, look to a company that is not afraid to build large work.

Pros

- company car - well paid

Cons

- management does not communicate at all. They expect you to mind read and meet their expectations perfectly, even while in training like a seasoned veteran . If you don’t, they will fire you with no explanation and a smile on their face. - no formal training program; I was supposed to be trained for 6 months and they cut it 2.5 months and seemed to have held me to the standards of my trainer who had been with the company for over 40 years. I say seemed because again, no communication! - passive aggressive phone calls; management won’t communicate but they do love to call you and make it your fault when they’re having a bad day. - Lack of respect; i was interviewed by 3 of the managers and I could tell which ones chose me/liked me and which ones didn’t. Any recommendations I had to make dispatching smoother fell on deaf ears as I was not taken seriously or treated as a member of the team. It was clear my boss had not chosen me, but was “stuck” with me and was prepping to fire me from the moment training was done. - overtime all day; my day started at 5AM, but I could easily work until 7PM because none of the foreman/superintendents would give me their schedules until 4-5PM if at all despite every day I asked for them between 9-10AM and instead of holding them accountable, my boss told me “that’s just the way it is” which I don’t believe because we were the only region with this problem. Gotta love a boys' club!
