Good company with some outdated views - Business Analyst Grant Street Group Employee Review

Pros

There is no doubting that Grant Street cares for their employees. Every new hire sends an introductory email to the whole company, and many people (sometimes even senior leadership) reply welcoming you. They send out goodies, notes, and are extremely flexible in terms of an independent schedule throughout the week. The work, being in software, is often faster-paced. I really liked this, as work would flow through the development cycle and there were always changes and new things to work on. This is especially true for the departments working on the newest products. Also, the business is doing very well. Everyone you meet is extremely friendly, and everyone I encountered was willing to help me if I had any questions. There is a very horizontal nature of the company structure, which enables you to often feel like you can reach out to anyone in the company for help, guidance, or just to say hi.

Cons

Despite all the pros from above, there are things about GSG that are less desirable. For one, the pay is not as competitive as similar roles out there. Granted the work is entirely remote, and it's very flexible, but the starting salary is slightly less than other BA roles. The largest con, in my opinion, surrounds GSG's lack of diversity and its more conservative natures. While a small company, and a niche tech market, there are few non-white employees (it's noticeable almost immediately). GSG prides itself on being 'removed' from taking stances on major controversies happening. They claim that it has to do with many employees' view that they want 'work to be separated from what's going on in the world'. For instance, no official statement was made by leadership/the company to condemn racism and police brutality. At the suggestion to hold an open town hall for anyone who wished (optionally) to discuss BLM and systemic racism, I heard leadership denied the request, citing "it might make some employees feel uncomfortable". All of the above are just facts that I've experienced/heard while at GSG, and anyone can take from them what you will. Personally, I found it all a little off-putting, and a direct contradiction to the warm, welcoming nature everyone seems to give off.

Our President and Co-CEO, Myles Harrington, asked me to pass along the following response to your review: We appreciate your complimentary remarks. With respect to your suggestion that starting salaries are not competitive, we do four things to make certain that they are: 1) We subscribe to and reference national compensation surveys to determine appropriate salary ranges for every position; 2) We consider what we are paying our employees with similar credentials; 3) We ask candidates to state explicitly their salary requirements and we try to satisfy them when they are within range of Nos. 1 and 2; and, 4) We encourage employees to tell us when they believe they are inadequately compensated (which they do) and we ask them for supporting evidence, which we use in reevaluating their compensation. With respect to your observation that we lack racial diversity, the same has been said of nearly every tech company in America. However, I believe we have one of the more promising recruiting campaigns in the industry. We have enlisted every one of our nearly 300 employees in the effort to recruit minority candidates and we pay them a generous bonus when they succeed. Our experience suggests that employee referrals are the most effective way to recruit a more racially diverse workforce. Finally, you take issue with our effort to keep politics out of the workplace. Anyone who has worked at Grant Street for a few weeks comes to realize how deeply committed we are to respecting individual freedom and the immeasurable value of each person. This, by extension, encompasses questions of social justice. They don’t need reassurance in the form of company announcements decrying social injustice. They don’t want us to follow the example of prominent business leaders who issue press releases signaling their disgust at what is obviously disgusting. They want us to confine our remarks to what pertains to the business. And most of all they want to be treated fairly, consistent with our mission statement: "Foster an unparalleled experience of freedom and fairness at work as a vital part of a team of extraordinarily talented professionals who are passionately committed to doing outstanding work in the service of their colleagues and the client."

Pros

My coworkers were great to work with

Cons

- Management here is extremely poor, even compared to companies where I had lower workplace satisfaction - Too much pivoting due to poor resource planning + management due to a poorly crafted longitudinal vision - Disingenuous execution of cultural outlook - Feedback is inconsistent and not supported by clear metrics/expectations

Response from our President: Thanks for complimenting your co-workers. It is a welcome tribute to our culture. For the past 20 years, Grant Street has sustained an organic, compound annual growth rate exceeding 20%. Surely such an extraordinary track record requires competent management. And, to your point, it requires lots of pivoting to sustain it, which has been and will continue to be possible only by developing what you describe as our newer, “extraordinary frontline staff”.
