First is the communication issues between levels of management. I was let go through a Kafkaesque caricature of mismanagement. My boss told me I was doing fine, then his boss told me I was doing badly. Then THAT boss told me I was doing fine, then HIS boss fired me. All this despite the documented evidence that my performance was improving and the positive feedback from my team.
Nobody knew what was going on and bosses seemed to make decisions with not enough information and not enough communication. The people most distant from my day-to-day work were ultimately the people responsible for me losing my job.
(It especially stung that I was let go when I was sick with Covid and logged on to work despite my illness.)
The pay is abysmal. I made nearly 50k less than I was expecting to get from our initial conversations, and even less than other companies offer for the same job title. I suspect that I made more than other engineers, and I further suspect that this is the main reason I was laid off.
Employees tend to repeat the company mantras back to themselves, trying to convince themselves and newer employees how great it is to work there. "You made it through our grueling interview process, you deserve to work here." "We're so great at working remotely." "Everyone here is trying to help." True or not, it gave off a kind of cultish vibe that didn't sit right with me. They continually tell you how much they value you and how important it is that they give you responsibility, but you are not rewarded for working hard.
The code is frankly wretched and ancient. You will not learn anything or improve your technical skills in any way by working at GSG. It is painful to work with, and weirdly overdocumented.
I found that I was stressed all the time -- every hour of every day. I'm not sure why this workplace stressed me out so much, I think I sensed that management didn't communicate well before i saw its effects firsthand. They demand a lot from you, and it's never clear if you're doing enough.
A smaller gripe, but an annoying one -- monthly paychecks. A normal workplace will pay you at least twice a month.
I've been in this industry a long time, and this was by far the worst job I have ever had. I have never been so stressed or so underpaid or laid off before working for GSG. Stay far away.
