Pros

Lots of opportunity to see what goes into designing buildings, particularly retail. I was able to learn a lot about the mechanical and plumbing systems, as well as a good amount of the other aspects of building design, e.g., civil, architecture, fire suppression. Senior engineers/designers were always willing to help out when needed. I was usually left to complete my work without any micromanaging or over-the-shouldering. Co-workers were friendly, and the work atmosphere was appropriate (focused, but relaxed). Pay was generally competitive, with reliability being noticed and referenced in raises. Benefits were good with 401k match up to 5% (I think). Raises were yearly, as were Christmas bonuses equal to about 1 paycheck.

Cons

My role was very repetitive throughout my time at GF. Every project was about 90% the same with little thought needed to complete the necessary work. After I had reached about 1 year of experience, there was basically a big plateau where there wasn't much more to be learned. I wasn't given many opportunities to go into the field and see projects, but others were. Some decisions on procedures created unnecessary stress such as relevant information not becoming available until the last minute. There didn't seem to be much room for growth other than gaining experience.

Pros

Great coworkers - they are knowledgeable and resourceful

Cons

No opportunities to really grow in the profession. Lots of copy paste projects. Which is great when you have people you are training. Gets old after a while. National clients so you are dealing with so many municipalities that have different requirements. Client management is not as strong as it could be
