Pros

The prior executive management were promoted internally - rising through the ranks. They were old school thinkers, but in a good way. They valued the concept of being a mutual life company and were not in favor of being a public owned life company, even though it probably would have made them richer. Salaries were below market rate, but the pension plan was outstanding. People working there for the most part are very friendly.

Cons

Times have changed, with new executive management in place. Pension plan is no more for new staff. Other cost cutting in place. Layoffs (right-sizing). Restructuring of the sales staff. Shaking out the old timers. Offices at the home office kind of drab and worn-out.

Pros

Good benefits and I have some kind and smart colleagues. Solid retirement contributions as part of the bonus program. Nice office spaces with good amenities.

Cons

People who have no business leading or managing people are put in positions of power because a higher up likes them. Reorgs and quiet layoffs are constant and people are stressed. People who aren’t in leadership absorb the chaos and deal with a lot of stress because managers manage up more than support their own teams. Lack of team meetings and expectations for managers to build a positive culture leads to competitive and attention seeking behaviors within teams.
